Well, it's been a few days. Thought I'd take a break on the blog just to build up some things to talk about. Been a tough couple of days but things are getting better.
Well, on my Watchmen forum in the "everything else" section there's been discussion about the Twilight series of books as well as the movie. What really shocks me is to see fan reaction. It would appear that if you are not a fan you get attacked! And not only verbally. I've read account after account of outraged 13-19 year olds who punch, scratch and kick non fans.
I have to say, I find this really reprehensible behavior. Part of learning to be an adult is to accept that others may not have your same opinions or points of view. You learn to deal with that. I'm not happy that there are those who don't like Watchmen or don't want to understand it, but I'm not going to gouge someone's eyes out for it.
Also in these books there are the elements of stalking, possessiveness, and control. Is this really the kind of thing that young people ought to be reading and identifying as "true love"? In real life those are terrifying things. Words of experience here, believe me. It wasn't romantic, let me tell you.
Again, I'm still quite shocked at some of the fan reactions, and I'm also saddened by it. What do you think?

Fan reaction to anything never surprises me anymore. I think it's just a reflection of our society as a whole - there's crazy hatefulness everywhere now. The funny thing about Twilight to me is how many of the fans are so un-fannish - maybe it's part of the weirdness? You rarely see fist fights between Trek fans and Stormtroopers, after all.
ReplyDeleteCreepy stalker boyfriend aside, Bella's the kind of heroine that I thought we were rid of. (I admit, I'm just now reading the 4th book so maybe she'll undergo a great personality change but I doubt it)
Here's a girl who's supposed to be smart and all that, and yet she has to be rescued EVERY SINGLE TIME by her much wiser, much older boyfriend - the one who spends all his time trying to take care of her, who wants to keep her pure and perfect, blah blah blah.
The weird thing is that people whom I regard as intelligent, independent women like this stuff. I guess it's part of a yearning for being taken care of on their part because they're just so worn out by having to do everything. It's escapism, in my opinion. I do find the story disturbing, though.
ReplyDeleteAlso, Gothic Dragon, here are some Rorschach fan-artworks that might make you smile:
"Hurm...Pretzel."

This one just made me ROFL, "How Do You See Rorschach?":

Have a good day today! I look forward to your Rorschach's Journal entries every day.
Also, I'm sorry I forgot to include this in my last comment, where is your Watchmen forum?
ReplyDeleteEugenia and Redkora, thanks for writing! I don't know what it is about Twilight. It's not the best written stuff out there, I guess it's escapism. I really dislike the stereotypical weak heroines that need rescuing every two minutes. I don't have a problem with any character, male or female having their failings but holy cow it's really overboard in these books!
ReplyDeleteI am all for a good Vampire romance, just I don't know this one falls flat. I do think the guy who plays Edward is cute, but then the dialog starts and my brain shuts down.
Redkora, those are terrific drawings! "Hurm, Pretzles" made me laugh as well as How Do you See Rorschach! LOL Admittedly I see him both ways! I guess then I'm Ultimate Fangirl! Bwahaha!
Incidentally, here's my forum. I'm Biosynth there. :) Lots of debate and intelligent conversation there, with just enough goofiness to make it fun. http://www.watchmencomicmovie.com/forum/index.php
Incidentally have you seen this? It cheers me up every time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDDHHrt6l4w&annotation_id=annotation_920011&feature=iv

Wow, now I know why the whole Twilight phenomenon has given me this vague creepy feeling. I've never seen the movie or read the books, all I know of it is one magazine article about the author and the books. My first reaction to it was why were all these intelligent mostly women embracing such a passive heroine and such creepy guys, even the good guy has to rescue her over and over again.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Eugenia about the fan intolerance being a byproduct of society's problems. As a parent I also tend to think alot of parents of teenagers didn't teach them enough about tolerance when they were little. They got older, parents tried to teach them then, too little too late. Has to be ingrained, and to be ingrained has to start when they're young.
